James and I attended Houston's Comicpalooza this year, along with his daughter Nickole and my sister Kelly. It was everyone's first time to attend except for Kelly, who had been once before. We all decided to cosplay as movie characters, although Kelly wasn't able to get a costume together in time since she had such a tight work schedule. Kelly currently works in Louisiana as a movie/TV prop builder and she also has talent as a makeup/special effects artist. James decided he wanted to go as Goose from the movie Top Gun, only he wanted to be the dead version of Goose, after he ejected from Tom Cruise's falling Tomcat jet and hit his head on the cockpit canopy. Kelly helped him apply a fake mustache and blood, and he added some plastic crabs and seaweed, since Goose was picked up out of the water after he was killed. James had several people take photos with him while at the convention, so I am hoping to see some turn up. I went as Marty McFly and Nickole chose Rey from the newest Star Wars installment. She designed the costume pieces herself from thrift store items and I think it came together terrifically. She also did her own hair and received lots of compliments on how close to the real character she looked. This was her first time to cosplay and there were lots of younger girls at the convention that loved getting photos of her and some of them even gave her a hug. It was awesome to watch. We carried our Nintendo 3DS's around and were able to Streetpass about 25 people each, which was less than previous conventions, but still great for a day's worth of walking around. The food was great, and was your typical convention fare of hotdogs, burgers, pizza and nachos. I got to meet Michael Biehn and get his autograph - you may know him better as Kyle Reese from the original Terminator film (my favorite movie of all time), or Corporal Hicks in the film Aliens. There were lots of cast members from Aliens, as this year marks the 30th anniversary of its release. Kate Beckinsale was also attending, but she was leaving right as we arrived. We all agreed that we will be attending next year. It was a lot of walking, but getting to take in all of the video game, pop culture and movie sights was well worth it. Like what you read?
